Stay Safe During BBQ Season
Now that the warm weather is here, it's time to get the grill out again. Here are some helpful tips to help keep your family and friends safe this BBQ season:
- Position the grill well away from siding, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
- If using a gas grill, make sure there are no gas leaks by rubbing soapy water onto the gas hose and turning the gas on. If there is a leak, you will see bubbles appear.
- Always use or store cylinders outdoors in an upright (vertical) position.
- When the propane cylinder is refilled, have the supplier check for dents, damage, rust, or leaks.
- Do not use, store, or transport a cylinder where it would be exposed to high temperatures. (This includes storing spare cylinders under or near the grill.)
- When lighting your grill, make sure the grill top is open.
- Designate the grilling area a "No Play Zone" keeping kids and pets well away until grill equipment is completely cool.
- Charcoal should be left in the grill until cold to the touch or thoroughly soaked in water before disposal.
- Only use starter fluid made for barbecue grills when starting a fire in a charcoal grill.
- Do not wear loose clothing while cooking.
- Never bring a barbecue grill indoors, or into any unventilated space, including the garage. This is both a fire and carbon monoxide poisoning hazard.
